Generational Identities Forged in Time: A Journey Through the Decades
*This is a collaborative post.
Generational identities are like the secret sauce flavouring how we view the world. Our formative years’ events, culture, and technologies shape these identities.
One way that is almost a unanimous way generations have expressed themselves is through their fashion choices. So, journey with us through the decades to explore how each generation has been defined and what makes them unique.
The Swinging Sixties- The Start of Generational Change
A Time of Resilience and Action
The sixties is the generation that the Baby Boomers will remember best. It was the decade they were in their prime and experienced life to its fullest! From retro kitchen tiles to the boom in animation television such as The Flintstones and The Bugs Bunny Show.
Fashion had already transformed in a post-World War II world, and the time of change continued on in more than just pinstripe suits. Fashion became less conservative and more liberating, particularly for women, who began opting for shorted and more waist-fitted dresses such as the swing and pencil dress.
The Dawn of Disco Era: Sexy Seventies
Passion, progress and equality
The seventies was another decade dominated by the Baby boomers, whose era spanned the longest time, with an eighteen-year range. The youngest boomers took full advantage of this tumultuous decade, which saw times of crisis, times of courage and times of change; with the dawn of the “jumbo jet” age, we saw the world suddenly become a lot smaller, allowing those lucky enough to get a flight, to see rarely explored areas. This quick access to the world saw people becoming much more aware of international issues. Greenpeace was founded in 1972 and 1975 saw the creation of Microsoft.
Fashion of this decade took an even more colourful approach as vibrant colours and paisley patterns surged in popularity.
Abba, the Swedish singing group that won Eurovision in 1974, famously wore their iconic flared pants. Fashion saw sci-fi elements incorporated as TV shows like Star Trek The Next Generation aired, as well as Star Wars Original Trilogy, which saw immense success.
Rock and Roll & Generation X (Those born 1965-1980)
A Digital Dawn and Cultural Shifts
Generation X grew up during a time of major technological and cultural shifts. Baby boomers born in the last few years of their generation saw the rise of personal computers, video games, and the beginning of the digital age, which would later characterize the 1980s. This generation is often described as independent, resourceful, and sceptical of authority. They were the first to grow up with MTV, which introduced a new era of music and entertainment. Economic downturns during their formative years taught them the value of adaptability and scepticism toward financial stability.
The Nineties to the New Millennium & Millennials (Those born 1981-1996)
The Rise of the Internet and Social Awareness
Millennials came of age during a time of rapid technological advancement and globalisation. The 1990s and early 2000s were defined by the rise of the Internet, social media, and a new era of connectivity. This generation is marked by its technological savvy, its value of diversity and inclusion, and its commitment to social and environmental causes. Millennials have been at the forefront of changing the workplace, seeking more flexibility, purpose, and work-life balance.
The 2010s Onwards & Generation Z (Those born 1997-2012)
Digital Natives in a Complex World
Generation Z has never known a world without the internet, smartphones, and social media. Born into a digital world, they are true digital natives with a unique perspective on privacy, information, and communication. The 2010s have seen them grow up during significant social and environmental change, economic uncertainty, and a global pandemic. This has made them more aware, pragmatic, and concerned about their future than previous generations. They value authenticity and mental health and are poised to bring a new wave of technological innovation and social change.
The 2020s & The Alpha Generation (Those born 2013-Present)
A New Chapter Unfolding
While it’s still early to define the Alpha Generation fully, they are growing up in a more connected yet more challenging world than ever before. The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, climate change, and rapid technological advancements in AI and robotics mark the 2020s. Early observations suggest this generation will be the most technologically immersed, environmentally conscious, and educated in history. Their journey is just beginning, but they will navigate a world vastly different from any before.
Each generation has been shaped by their time’s unique challenges and opportunities. From the Silent Generation’s resilience in the face of economic hardship to Generation Z’s digital savvy and social awareness, these generational identities reflect the evolving landscape of society. As we look forward to the future, it’s exciting to think about how the Alpha Generation and beyond will continue to forge their paths, influenced by the world they inherit and the advancements they will witness. Our decades-long journey highlights the differences and the continuous thread of innovation, adaptation, and the human spirit.
